The Rest Is Silence: New Work
by Amy Greenan and Elizabeth Switzer
January 8 - 30, 2016
This exhibition is both a nod to the Prince of Denmark’s last words - as well as a meditation on the darkness of the winter months and the calm and little death that is brought by the first white blanket of snow.
Each artist make use of text in these works: Switzer uses her own material – years of journal entries made in times of elation and stress spread across the page and reinvents the text as if to ‘white over’ the years and recreate a new story; Greenan approaches the work from a fascination with letterform as metaphor. She seeks to use the letters as a vehicle for semi-abstract experiments with imperfection, form, color, and contrast, and the dichotomy of absence and presence.
Just as the winter brings with it a moment of pause which heralds a rebirth, both literal and metaphorical, so do these artists' seek to start again with their own works.
